Making Money as a Self-Publisher

Lets face it printing a comic and then selling a few hundred, one at a time is just not a good way to make money and quit that daytime job!

There are three ways to make money as a self-publisher…

  1. Make an IP
  2. Do commission drawings
  3. Go to conventions

The first two are the most obvious, but some of the smaller full-time self publishers use the income from the third category to quit that dead end job.

Conventions can become 1/3 of your revenue if you do it right.  Do it Right?  Yesx go on the cheap, take advantage of cheap artist tables AND MERCHADISE YOURSELF!

Do not show up with two or three comics, you will be disappointed.   Take your IP to the next level by making posters, postcards, t-shirts, art trading cards, etc.

In the past, this was hard to do and cost thousands of dollars.  However with some good old fashion creativity you can make most of these items off your Epson printer.  Sure it takes time but you can make most of your items cheaply and your gonna look like a pro!

Now once you get this income coming in you will find its going to take up more of your time, which is fine—never hurts to sacrifice some drawing time for money!  However, when you get into a 50/50 situation, then its time to start having a digital press company help you out.

They can do the work for you for about the same cost you are making it for.

Here are some ideas of things you need to bring to a con…

  • Your comics
  • Sketch Book,  5.5” x 8.5”,  32-48 pages,  few dozen copies
  • T-Shirts, full color, 2-l, 2-xl, 2-xxl for your top 3 images
  • Art Prints, 12”x18”, 2-3 of each
  • Postcards, 4”x6”, dozen of each print
  • Art cards, 2.5”x3”, few hundred as promos and give a ways
  • Nice backdrop to display your art and name
  • Business cards
  • Nice sign about commissions

Don’t forget to put your name and website on everything!

Now what if you could get all of this for $250 – $350?   Well then time to look at our prices!

Thank You for your time,

Ken Whitman
